Exeter Businesses Pledge to become Disability Confident

Devon Disability Collective in association with the DWP on Friday hosted an event on Marsh Barton on Friday to help Exeter employers understand how being disability confident can grow their businesses, widen their talent pools and retain the right mix of people.

Karen Palin from the DWP said, “large businesses usually have specialist Human Resource departments.   However, small and medium employers often have little time because of their involvement in the day-to-day running of their businesses to appreciate how much help there is through Access to Work and the benefits are that they could employ someone with great potential for their business”.

Disability Confident is a scheme that is designed to help you recruit and retain people with disabilities and people with health conditions for their skills and talent.

Ben Bradshaw MP was the speaker of the day and was the first person to make a pledge on the Disability Confident pledge board, the event was closed by the Right Worshipful Lord Mayor Councillor Lesley Robson, followed by factory tours of Devon Disability Collective.  Sense’s Café 55 in Exeter aptly provided the catering for the day.

Michael Crompton-Holgate, DDC’s CEO said; “we were absolutely delighted to work with the DWP on this event, the real people case talks which included people we employ will hopefully give other businesses confidence in this initiative, and inspire them to ‘widen the net’ the next time they are looking to recruit”.  “At DDC, we focus on ability and it is our aim to reduce the unfair disadvantages that people with disabilities face in the job market”.
